I am getting conflicint information on the web and as I am no Bill Gates when it comes to computers I don’t know what to do when the bubble pops up asking me to let install an update for java.

You are wise to be skeptical when something asks you to update. There is so much malicious fake stuff on the internet. But jucheck .exe IS legitimate. It is triggered by jusched. exe (task manager all users)
You can see exactly when your Java will check for updates by going to Control Panel > Java > Updates. You can adjust the frequency of the updates check here also.
It is always best to keep Java fully patched and updated. Viruses and other malware have been known to use unpatched vulnerabilities in Java in order to infect.
